US Edtech Funding Keeps Rolling: $350M Raised in Q3 2015

KA'CHING QUARTERLY: In Q3 2015, US edtech companies raised $350 million, up 9% from total funding reported in Q3 of last year. General Assembly’s $70 million fundraise lead all deals in Q3, followed by Civitas Learning’s $60 million Series D.

Funding volume, in terms of both deals and dollars, dipped from Q2 2015. Forty-nine separate deals were reported in Q3, down slightly from 54 last quarter. Investment dollars in K-12 edtech companies declined from $184 million in Q2 2015 to $100 million in Q3. In Q2, big rounds in AltSchool ($100 million) Duolingo ($45 million) fueled the strong showing. The largest K-12 deals in Q3 were significantly smaller: BrightBytes raised $33 million in July and Panorama Education raised $12 million in August.

These funding figures exclude the massive round of funding in Q3 from SoFi ($1 billion) While the company operate in education, it does not count technology in education and learning outcomes as its core business.
