MOOCs
Shorthand for "massively open online courses," MOOCs are a type of online course that has very large to unlimited enrollment, often achieved by employing automated assessments.
Overview

Popularized by Stanford when Sebastian Thrun, Andrew Ng, and other professors undertook an experiment to offer online lectures available to the public for free. Since then, Thrun has left Stanford to join Udacity; Ng has started Coursera with Stanford colleague, Daphne Koller; and Harvard and MIT have joined forces to start edX.
