Education Department Expands TechHire Initiative to Build Pipeline for In-Demand Jobs

Dec 1, 2016

CAREER OPPS: Since President Obama launched the TechHire initiative in 2015, more than 4,000 people have been trained and connected to local work opportunities in IT. Today the U.S. Department of Education announced that the program is expanding beyond its goal of 50 communities. TechHire will add training opportunities to 20 new geographic areas, including Anchorage, Alaska and Puerto Rico.

TechHire’s goal is to train workers for 21st century jobs. “When workers lose their jobs or get stuck in lower-wage jobs because of local economic shifts due to no fault of their own, they should have clear pathways to the middle class. Technology jobs can offer this pathway,” the department said in a press release.

Opportunity@Work, a nonprofit focused on expanding access to careers, has partnered with the Education Department to help grow and support the program.
