TAG, WHO'S IT?: Standards are only useful if folks know about them. When it comes to the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI), an effort led by the Association of Educational Publishers and Creative Commons to create a metadata framework to make searching for online educational content easier, there’s still a lot of outreach to do. A recent survey by LRMI found that while over 83% of publishers are aware of tagging efforts, 87% of educators are in the dark (and only 6.4% had heard of LRMI). But both sides agree that metadata--especially when it comes to content, subject area and grade level--are “the most helpful search criteria for online educational resources.” Here’s hoping that this consensus will avoid situations like this.
