School Tool: 'What So Proudly We Hail' Explores Civics with Literary Gems

Apr 10, 2013

Free! WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAIL is an e-learning project by Amy and Leon Kass that transforms excerpts from their book (of the same name) into a ten-part civics curriculum. Created under the notion that "developing robust American citizens is a matter of the heart as well as the mind," the curriculum is largely centered around classic American short stories and intended for inquiry-based learning environments.

The accompanying library is jam-packed with author bios, selected texts, and study guides, but teachers will especially appreciate the video discussions where the Kasses (both UChicago professors) sit with expert guest hosts to model what high-level dialogue around each text should look like. What So Proudly We Hail also gives a nod to the Common Core with many of the essay questions and writing prompts aligned to standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies.
