THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE: The New Media Consortium (NMC) has published a "Short List" of the top emerging higher-ed technologies that it will consider including for its upcoming full report, due February 2013. For the uninitiated, NMC publishes a yearly report that identifies edtech trends and predicts their "time-to-adoption horizon." Of the following twelve "finalist" trends, six will be chosen for the final report. Time to place your bets!

- 2-3 years: augmented reality, game-based learning, the Internet of Things, learning analytics
- 4-5 years: 3D printing, flexible displays, next-gen batteries, wearable technology
