California Charter Management Organization Hopes to Build Mastery in ELA Skills

This high school is looking for an adaptive curriculum product that helps students build mastery in basic reading, writing and grammar and that can support data-driven instruction.

State: California Number of Students: 194
School Type: Charter Management Organization Free and Reduced Lunch: 51.0%
Grade Level: K-8 English Language Learners: 16.5%

School Context

This is the first high school being opened in a charter network that already operates at the elementary and middle school levels. The school model focuses on project-based learning and incorporates skill-based learning through blended learning programs.

State of Technology

They are determining what technology to include in the model for a high school opening in Fall 2016. Students need to be able to move at their own pace and work towards mastery of Common Core skills. For example, a student should be able to finish a full year of content in half of the time, if they choose.

Currently, there is no solution. The middle school uses iReady, Reading Plus, Reading Assistant and Illuminate.

Tech Needs & Requirements

Ideally, the tool will adapt to students' current skill level and lead them through the process of mastering new skills. The tool needs to support Common Core ELA skills in grades 7-12 so that their lower skilled students can still engage. Content should cover reading comprehension, grammar and writing. Integration with NWEA Map testing data or other forms of data to enrich how the tool adapts is a nice-to-have, but is not a requirement.

Students should be able to go as fast or slow as they want. They should also have access to their own data and reports so they can monitor their own progress.

Teachers should be able to modify or override the student's learning path if they have observed mastery of a specific skill set (outside the tool) by that student. Otherwise, the tool should be able to run independently of the teacher.

The school provides students with 1:1 Chromebooks. The tool must cover Common Core, allow students to go at their own pace, give students real time assessment and feedback, allow teachers to influence the path a student takes. Teachers will combine mastery data from the tool with their own observations to indicate (on their own report cards) whether a student has earned a 1,2 or 3 on a particular skill. The tool must be web based, export to CSV and integrate with Clever.
