BON VOYAGE: A team of scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently received a $1.5 million award from the Office of Naval Research to hone their tutoring software for mathematics. Led by Beverly Woolf and Ivon Arroyo, the team has been working on an "emotionally perceptive" math program, Wayang Outpost, that uses adaptive AI to evaluate students' skills and adjust instructions accordingly. Why's the ONR interested, you ask? "One long-term goal is to reduce training time and instructor costs while improving the technical skills of sailors and Marines."
