Textbook publishers see opportunities in MOOCs

TEXTBOOK SAVIOR? Publishers are feeling the heat, leading some to take drastic measures to stay afloat. (See: Macmillan New Ventures). Now the Chronicle of Higher Education contends that MOOCs may hold the key to sustaining the academic publishing market. With course enrollments in the (tens of) thousands, a MOOC could mean serious bucks for publishers if a fraction of the students purchased relevant textbooks. But of course, we expect savvy students will find ways to get materials without paying anything at all. Some publishers, including Flat World Knowledge and Boundless, not to mention CK-12, already offer online texts for free.
