PLACE YOUR BETS: The New Media Consortium and Educause have released the 2012 Horizon Report for Higher Ed, identifying key trends, challenges, and offering predictions about adoption timeframes for apps and tablets (a year or less!), game-based learning and analytics (2-3 years), gesture-based computing and an questionably-titled "Internet of Things" (4-5 years). Audrey Watters makes a somewhat poignant comment about the horizon metaphor for edtech, as something visible that surrounds us but slips away no matter which direction we go. Of course, seeing "can't-miss" trends disappearing and later re-surfacing can make it seem like having deja-vu and amnesia at the same time--like we think we've forgotten this stuff before.
