macarthur foundation got badges?

Got badges?: How's this for a badge call to action: "Badges represent a battering ram to tear down the walls of the educational fortress." So says the College Open Textbook blog, as it reports that COT is becoming a beta partner of the Mozilla Foundation's badges project. EdSurge readers will remember that the Mozilla Foundation, with funding from the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is working hard on an open ecosystem for badges--in other words, a way that people can get public credit for mastering skills in lieu of a paper certificate or diploma. It's a concept that makes ginormous sense in a world where learning outside of formal settings is increasingly important. Peer 2 Peer University has been an early partner with Mozilla. On September 15, the MacArthur Foundation will launch its fourth Digital Media and Learning Competition, this one structured around badges. Register here. Expect to see more badge beta partners popping up soon.
