Khan Academy summer camp emphasizes hands-on activities

CAMPING WITH KHAN: The jury's still out (and probably on permanent vacation) over Salman Khan's teaching methods when it comes to his online videos. But what about in real life? The NYTimes got a sneak peek into the Khan Academy's version of summer camp, the Discovery Lab in Palo Alto, and found the man himself directing lessons on robotics, reverse-engineering, and the stock exchange. In true Maker-esque fashion, Khan moved away from the drawing board and had students get hands-on with electronics, balloons, and papers--even joining in the fun himself as he bartered paper goods with paper money. "Our goal is to push the envelope of how far virtual education can go, but obviously the experiences like you're seeing here can only be done physically for a long, long time...probably forever."
