DISTRICTS STEP UP: The U.S. Department of Education received 893 notices of "intent to apply" from school districts across America for the $400 million Race To the Top funding. Nearly half--or 433--applied for between $5 to $10 million in funding; another 109 applied for the highest category, grants valued at $30 to $40 million. (Another 11 districts weren't quite sure how much they will need but they signalled that they're willing to give it a shot, anyway.) The names of all the districts are here.
