IXL Learning Buys Education.com to Add More Learning Games and Activities

Nov 18, 2019

IXL Learning, a San Mateo, Calif.-based provider of a learning resources platform for K-12 students, has bought Education.com, a similar company based in the same city. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 1998, IXL claims to serve eight million K-12 students with a platform that combines analytics, curriculum and diagnostic tools, according to a statement Monday. IXL previously bought ABCya in 2018 for its educational computer games and apps. IXL offers lessons on subjects including math, English language arts, science, social studies and Spanish.

Founded in 2006, Education.com claims to serve more than 23 million teachers, parents and homeschoolers with more than 30,000 digital and printable learning resources for preK to fifth grade. Its worksheets, online games, lesson plans, songs and other materials cover more than 800 skills in areas that include many of the same subject areas as IXL’s offerings.

Other acquisitions this year of curriculum-focused companies include Weld North Education’s purchase of Glynlyon, ACT’s purchase of Mawi Learning and Edmentum’s purchase of Calvert Education Services.
