Tools and Resources: AIR Services Fix and Improve Schools

This article is part of the guide: The Personalized Learning Toolkit.

Low-performing schools have a strong advocate in the American Institutes for Research (AIR). Through its District and School Improvement Center (DSI Center), the non-profit group offers an extensive array of services including individualized instructional coaching to fit school or district needs, addressing community and family involvement, data analysis and assistance obtaining grants. It also has a profusion of research and assessment services available.

AIR’s comprehensive School Turnaround and Transformation Program is a research-based service that works from a framework, building the systems and expertise that schools and districts need to sustain improvements over the long term. The process begins with an in-depth assessment that leads to an innovative and aggressive improvement plan. The framework’s other components include leadership that drives change, educator effectiveness, coherent instructional guidance, student-centered climate and family and community engagement.

The State Support Network is operated by AIR for the U.S. Department of Education. The network collaborates with states and districts to provide technical assistance and peer connections, and leverage effective evidence-based practices to induce change, sustain continuous improvement and ensure student success.

AIR is also an authority on the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and offers its expertise via a guide it calls the ESSA Co-Pilot. Organized by topic, plan section and state, the resources provide research-based tools and support. Check out AIR crosswalk (PDF) to see ESSA requirements, updates and more.
