Google Chips In $10M for Computer Science Building at University of Washington

Feb 13, 2017

GOOGLE GIFTS: Google is feeling generous. This week the company confirmed that it has donated $10 million to the University of Washington to help support the college’s new computer science and engineering (CSE) building. The funding is part of the $90 million total that the project has received from UW, individual donors and other Seattle-based tech giants including Microsoft and Amazon. According to GeekWire, the funds are not restricted to any specific focus, but the gift is “a mix of support for research projects and research facilities.

In the decade since UW’s current CSE facility opened, GeekWire also reports that “the demand for computer science graduates has skyrocketed in the Seattle region,” thanks to the region’s booming startup scene that’s home to offices for Google, Facebook, Amazon, Zillow, Microsoft and more. At 135,000 square-feet, the new building is expected to double the capacity for UW’s CSE program.
