Nonprofit Urges Senate to Question Betsy DeVos on Edtech at Confirmation Hearing

Jan 6, 2017

COMMON SENSE QUESTIONS FOR DEVOS: Common Sense Media’s policy arm, Common Sense Kids Action, is encouraging lawmakers to question Donald Trump’s education secretary pick, Betsy DeVos, at her confirmation hearing next week on issues surrounding education technology, privacy and early learning. In a letter (PDF) sent yesterday to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, the organization sent a series of questions to probe DeVos on her edtech stances and plans. The list includes:

  • What investments does Ms. DeVos plan to make as Education Secretary regarding education technology in public schools to ensure our children grow up prepared to be leaders at home and abroad in the global economy?
  • What does Ms. DeVos believe the Department should do to ensure that all school children stay connected whether at school or at home?
  • Does she believe that greater limits should be placed on the sharing of student directory information that is regularly collected and shared by schools today?
