New York Daily News Owner to Give $100M in Grants for Scientific Study in Israel

Jan 27, 2016

MORTIMER ZUCKERMAN, the 78-year-old mogul behind the New York Daily News, has announced a $100 million founding donation to establish The Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program, which will give grants to promising postdoctoral and graduate scientists pursuing research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. According to The Wall Street Journal, the program will give $100 million in grants over the next 20 years.

The awardees will work with faculty at four Israeli institutions of higher education: Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University and the Weizmann Institute of Science. These universities will also receive grants to better their laboratories. Zuckerman hopes to bring Israeli and American scientists together in a program resembling the Rhodes Scholarship, the Journal reports.
