'B' IS FOR BENEFIT at least with regards to the legal status of some edtech startups. Socratic Labs is the latest to register as a B Corp, as GigaOM reports. Currently, 19 states allow "do-good" companies to incorporate as a Benefit Corporation, which offers some measure of protection from potential lawsuits filed by investors who would rather see some quick profits. Other B-Corp edtech startups include Kickboard and Schoolzilla.
Editor's note: Looks like we jumped the gun a bit: Jen Medbery writes to remind us: "Kickboard is a very mission-driven company and we've completed the B-Lab Impact assessment in the past, but we've not completed the official B Lab certification process."
