'Breakthrough' Schools Score Millions in Grants

Jul 15, 2013

WAVE OF PERSONALIZATION: Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) announced the 38 grant recipients for its latest call for breakthrough school models for grades 6-12. Awards were based on the applicant's plan to design schools around personalized, blended, and competency-based education. Eight schools received Launch Grants worth $150K each (plus an additional $300K contingent on 1:1 match) to start schools this fall. Thirty others will each get $100K planning grants for schools starting in fall 2014. (See the full list of Planning and Launch grants recipients.) The press release noted that half of the 38 grantees were districts, a shift from previous years where charter networks received the majority of grants.
