Black Mountain SOLE Raises $5M for DIY School

May 12, 2013

BLACK MOUNTAIN SOLE: $5 million to Black Mountain, NC-based nonprofit Black Mountain SOLE, which claims to be "the world's first tuition-free, residential, self-organized learning environment [hence the acronym] for higher education." (That's quite a mouthful.) More info in the press release. Led by three young co-founders, the school offers programs that include a "Geronimo Gap Year" which focuses on experiential learning, and a 9-month MOOC Campus. Tuition may be free, but living expenses at the 1,200-acre mountain resort run northwards of $10K. (Unless you got accepted into an Ivy League school and still decide to go SOLE instead.) Definitely sounds like a possible destination for the UnSchooling crowd.
