Gobstopper Gives English Classics a Lift

Mar 3, 2013

GOBSTOPPER: $425K to startup Gobstopper, which has officially launched its site. The startup is cofounded by former English teacher, Jason Singer and engineering whiz kid (former founded and CTO of ZangZing) Mauricio Alvarez. Its seed funding comes from NewSchools Venture Fund, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings and EdMentor’s Ron Beller and Jennifer Moses, among others. Gobstopper lets teachers pick public domain texts (think Mark Twain, Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe) and lace them with the kinds of questions, quizzes and other media that would normally wind up on separate handouts.Teachers can add in, for instance, short quizzes for students to complete as they finish the reading that get automatically graded or even short video clips of themselves commenting on the text.
