Florida Considers Reducing Tuition for High-Demand Majors

Dec 18, 2012

WHAT'S A DEGREE WORTH? The NYTimes reports that Florida governor Rick Scott recently suggested that university tuition hikes be frozen for majors in high-demand, 'strategic areas' like science and engineering. Critics worry that such price tiers will "inevitably reduce" the number of students pursuing liberal arts programs and along with it, department funding. English teacher Pamela Newton contends that the underlying assumptions that these courses don't prepare students for jobs, or that scientists and engineers should stick to their own disciplines, smack of "madness" and "fallacy."
