Flatiron School Raises $9M to Expand Coding Classes Across the US

Apr 16, 2015

FLATIRON SCHOOL: $9 million to New York City-based Flatiron School in a Series B round led by Thrive Capital, with CRV and Matrix also participating. The company, founded in 2012, offers in-person coding classes on two campuses in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and boasts a 99% job placement rate for graduates who finish its 12-week program. Flatiron raised $5.5 million in a seed round just a year ago and recently launched classes for high school students in other US cities.

Flatiron also has a celebrity student in Victoria's Secret supermodel Karlie Kloss (who is reportedly dating one of the company's investors.) She's probably not driven by financial incentives to learn to code, but she's offering scholarships for 20 girls to take Flatiron's software engineering intro course for free. She's not the first female celebrity to lend support behind coding; Mindy Kaling, who's friends with the founders of Hopscotch, is getting involved with Google's MadeWithCode initiative.
