TEACHING AND CODING FOR AMERICA: Starting in summer 2015, The Flatiron School and Teach for America will offer a new program to teach educators how to code. The 20 participants, who must have completed a two-year teaching commitment with TFA and have committed to teaching at least one more year, will learn coding through a combination of online work and a one-week in-person bootcamp. The educators will then spend 6-8 weeks as junior co-instructors teaching coding to high school students in The Flatiron School’s pre-college programs in New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago and Austin, and ultimately return to their classrooms with access to Flatiron’s curriculum and web-based software. “Our hope is that our teachers can walk away with a basic understanding of the most in-demand technologies, and share that with their students,” Lyel Resner, Director of K-12 & Social Impact at The Flatiron School, told EdSurge. The Flatiron School hopes to expand educator coding courses beyond TFA in the future.
