Twitter Exec Reports that Educators Dominate the Twitter-sphere

ALL A-TWITTER: Educators like to tweet! Out of the 1/2 billion tweets that post every day, 4.2 million are related to education, according to Brett Baker, an account executive at Twitter.com. To put this in perspective, while you read this past sentence, over 3,000 edu-related tweets have flown across the Twitterverse.

Baker, along with a couple of other colleagues at Twitter, has taken notice. At ASU-GSV, they shared that their small education team has begun collecting stories about how educators are using Twitter to see if there are ways Twitter can support educators more. If you have a suggestion or story to share about using Twitter in your school, tweet to @bbaker and use the hashtag #twitteredu.

Check out how one San Francisco history teacher uses twitter in his classroom to teach World War I or how principal Steve Williams is changing the culture of Sunlake High School through Twitter. Both of these educators recognize the power of Twitter as a classroom tool, partly because of the short format and because most students have access to a smartphone even if they don’t have access to functional internet at home. In fact, 76% of users access Twitter via a mobile phone.

On a related note, ever spent time in Twitter jail because you went over your hourly tweet quota while tweeting a conference or moderating a Twitter chat? Drop a line to Katrina at katrina@edSurge.com. Twitter may be able to make adjustments to your account!
