HarvardX Spends $75K to $150K to Create MOOCs

May 19, 2014

WALK OF FAME: You won't find any professors or schools on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But someday you might. Top universities are spending top dollars in an attempt to create top-notch MOOCs. The Boston Globe reports that HarvardX "spends about $75,000 to $150,000 developing each new MOOC." (Paranormal Activity, the popular indie horror flick, cost just $15,000.) With a production unit that rivals indie movie studios, HarvardX is sparing no resources as it looks to triple its library of 30 courses. Higher budgets and higher expectations, of course, also come with "unforeseen hours of work" involved in creating as little as 30 seconds of footage.
