The Houston Independent School District, the 7th largest public school district in the US and the largest in Texas, serves more than 202,000 students. Just more than half of those students attend approximately 170 elementary schools. The district also has 42 middle schools, 55 high schools and 31 combined or special schools, for a total of almost 300 schools.
Approximately 62% of students are Hispanic; 265.% are African American. White students are 78% of the population and almost 3% are Asian.
Approximately 8.2% of the students are learning English as a second language; 21% are bilingual. Almost 80% of the students are eligible for reduced or free lunches (Title 1); 63% are considered "at risk" students. And 13.4% of students are considered "Gifted/talented."
