DATA SAYS: InsideHigherEd brings to our attention, Degree Compass, a system developed at Austin Peay State University that predicts students' grades for classes before they even begin. Goal? To help counselors match students with classes and improve graduation rates. Degree Compass claims its first trial last year was "reasonably" accurate, predicting student grades for classes to within six-tenths of a point. Much more impressive were its predictions for students' semester GPA, where it got within two-hundredths of a point. The system received a $1 million grant last year Complete College America and the Gates Foundation.
