VIDEO DREAMING: Got students who love to write songs? This contest is literally out of this world. Rocket21, (a beta site) puts teens in contact with people who are living the dream: professionals who are, say, producing TV programs, working at the forefront of science, building videogames or making music. (Here’s a link for educators) Kids get to swap emails with the "pros" and with one another. Then there are the R21 challenges. The current contest, co-sponsored by NASA, calls for students to write the lyrics to a song about pursuing dreams (and maybe even discovering something out there in the galaxy). All the details are here and the top prizes are pretty fabulous. (Of course, song writing should be its own reward, right?) R21 has poured huge energies into designing a site that keeps kids cybersafe (and real-life safe). Kids can can sign up here for a (genuinely) free membership.
