Chance the Rapper to Donate $1M to Chicago Public Schools

Mar 7, 2017

TAKING A CHANCE ON CPS: Hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper is putting his money where his mouth is. This week, the Grammy-winner announced he’s donating $1 million to Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Tribune reports. Chance, a South Chicago native, made the announcement to room full of Chicago students at Westcott Elementary School, which could end the school year 13 days early due to a budget crisis.

The announcement followed a recent meeting between the artist and Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, where the two discussed the $215 million budget shortfall facing the district. "Gov. Rauner can use his executive power to give Chicago's children the resources they need to fulfill their God-given right to learn," Chance told those in attendance at the press conference.

He hopes the check, and subsequent press, will serve as a call to action. In the meantime, Chance is urging fans to continue to donate to CPS themselves.
