Study Shows More Teachers Are Among Increasing Number of MOOC Users

Jan 12, 2017

WHO ARE THE MOOC-ERS? MOOCs—where students are also teachers. That’s among the findings from a new report from Harvard and MIT, examining 280 courses offered by the two schools through edX since 2012. Researchers say that 32 percent of respondents self-identified as “being” or “having been” a teacher. Of this group, 19 percent said they teach the same subject as the online course they were participating in.

Over the four-year period in the study, 2.4 million unique users took a MITx or HarvardX course, with an average of 1,554 new participants enrolling each day. Roughly 245,000 certificates were issued, and earners spent roughly 29 hours interacting with the courseware to earn them. A large majority of learners were male (67 percent) and hailed from outside the U.S. (71 percent).
