Online Education Platform Treehouse Announces $1M Scholarship Program

Nov 29, 2016

THE GIVING TREE(HOUSE): It’s no secret that the tech industry has a problem with its lack of diversity. Online education platform Treehouse knows this, and today announced one of the ways it’s hoping to combat the issue. The Portland, Ore.-based company, which provides classes including web design and coding, introduced a $1 million scholarship program focusing on nonprofits that support people with disabilities, socio-economic challenges, veterans and populations that are underrepresented in tech.

Through the program, Treehouse will fund half of the amount of online seats that a nonprofit applies for, granting them double the amount of access to all of the platform’s courses. (It’s not the first MOOC to give back—earlier this year edX and Coursea launched programs to support refugees.) The company—which now has 75,000 students enrolled—is already accepting applications and today also announced its first three awardees: Operation Code, Path Forward and LaunchCode.
