How Should We Value Informal Learning?

MEASURING WHAT COUNTS: LEARNING OR CREDENTIALS? That was the topic of a panel discussion and Twitter chat hosted today by CUNY's Futures Initiative and HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory). Panelists included Anya Kamenetz (@anya1anya), NPR digital education reporter; Brey Eynon, historian and vice president for academic affairs at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY; and Leah Gilliam (@leahatplay), vice president of education, strategy and innovation at Girls Who Code.

Participants chimed in on topics including the history, purpose and effects of standardized testing, LaGuardia Community College's development of an alternative portfolio system of assessment, and the importance of informal spaces of learning.
