Amazon Launches "With Math I Can" Initiative

Feb 2, 2016

WITH MY MIND ON MY MATH: Today, Amazon has announced the launch of “With Math I Can," an initiative intended to drive teachers and parents to push the "growth mindset" from the likes of professor Carol Dweck in math classes. At the center of the initiative is a pledge targeting teachers and family members, asking them to sign and subsequently shift from "fixed mindset" to "growth mindset" instruction in the classroom. Additionally, the initiative's website contains resources to learn about what it means to have a growth mindset, lesson plans, and more.

Why the launch? Only 44% of low-income students acquire a basic understanding of math, reports Rohit Agarwal, General Manager of Amazon K-12 Education. And when it comes to TenMarks, the adaptive math platform that Amazon acquired back in 2013, Amazon's Edu team saw that even though students were progressing on the platform, they "continued to hear students say, 'I'm not good at math'."

In terms of what is next for the Amazon team, Agarwal reports, "We're hoping to drive from an analog way of teaching to a digital classroom... how do you have the right interactive content for students?"
