Cengage Learning Acquires Learning Objects to Grow Adaptive Learning Platform

Sep 22, 2015

LEARNING OBJECTS: Cengage Learning has acquired Washington, DC-based Learning Objects, which develops two tools—Difference Engine, which allows instructors to create adaptive, competency-based online courses, and Campus Pack, a social learning platform where students and teachers can connect and create digital portfolios.

With this purchase, Cengage Learning intends to increase the flexibility of its digital content delivery tool, MindTap. Learning Objects offers backbone technology that can create an adaptive learning experience using any piece of content. Jon Mott, Chief Learning Officer at Learning Objects, maintains that the technology will remain “content agnostic”—meaning it will work with resources provided by any provider. One of the future goals for the tool, he shares with EdSurge, is for the platform to be able to track students' knowledge of key concepts across different classes and grade levels.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. More details in the press release.
