The rest drop out in a pattern similar to why they quit other self-improvement measures, like going to the gym or wearing fitness trackers. For both MOOC enrollment and gym membership, Glance attributes the quitting to “ego depletion,” the theory that people have a limited pool of willpower to exert any given day.
