What Do MOOCs and Diets Have in Common?

STICK WITH IT: Choose your resolutions wisely: you might only have enough ego for one.

As David Glance, Professor at the University of Western Australia, writes on Science2.0, only 5-10% of students enrolled in online courses complete them. The rest drop out in a pattern similar to why they quit other self-improvement measures, like going to the gym or wearing fitness trackers. For both MOOC enrollment and gym membership, Glance attributes the quitting to “ego depletion,” the theory that people have a limited pool of willpower to exert any given day.
