Shuttleworth Foundation Supports Lumen Learning's OER Efforts

Apr 16, 2014

ALWAYS LOW PRICES: The Shuttleworth Foundation has awarded a second round of funding to Lumen Learning to support its efforts to help school leaders and faculty design and adopt OER materials. Lumen received $365,000 in 2013 and got the same amount for this year. Co-founded by OER pioneer David Wiley, Lumen Learning has its roots in earlier projects that show how, in some cases, it is possible to improve student success rates while reducing textbook costs to $0.

In the press release, Lumen says it has "achieved total textbook cost savings for students estimated at more than $1 million." Lumen currently has 25 customers, and pledges to "support open course alternatives for the fifty highest enrollment courses at most two- and four-year institutions" by the end of 2014.
