Remind101 Raises $3.5M Series A

Sep 18, 2013

REMIND101: $3.5 million to San Francisco, CA-based Remind101 in Series A round led by The Social + Capital Partnership, with famed entrepreneur Yuri Milner and others participating. Chamath Palihapitiya, Founder and Manager of The Social + Capital Partnership, will join the board. Remind101, which was part of Imagine K12's inaugural class, had quietly raised a $1M seed round from First Round Capital and other angels.

Remind101 offers a free, safe service to let teachers communicate with students and parents. (Here's more about how it works.) The startup boasts impressive traction: over 10% of K-12 teachers in the U.S. (more than 400,000) are using its service to get in touch over 6 million students and parents.

As the user count grow, so will the team and the product offerings. One of the most requested features that the team of 14 is working on, co-founder and CEO Bret Kopf tells EdSurge, is document uploading. Further down the line, he says the company may develop solutions for other "primitive" administrative tasks like hall passes and permission slips. "Anything where schools are dealing with archaic processes, we'll figure ways to tackle."

Kopf, attributes much of his team's success to an internal advisory board of 70 teachers across the U.S. and Canada. "I'm not a teacher," he admits, "so it's important to realize that I don't have all the answers."
