PEARSON DEBUTS STARTUP PARTNERS: Now the big guns come out: The Pearson Catalyst for Education program just announced the six companies that it will support in its initial cohort:

Ace Learning Company: Helping college and professional students browse educational materials on the web;
- Actively Learn: (which also got good marks in the ISTE Pitchfest). It is creating a platform for improved ways to learn to read;

Class Owl: An academic platform built by students for students;
- Full Stack Data Science: A data analysis shop specializing in natural language and text processing with big data and and applied machine learning;

Spongelab: A library of science content, teaching tools with strong teacher development elements.

VLinks Media: Building a platform for content creators to deliver courses to learners on mobile devices and on the web.
The Catalyst program will last for three months; Pearson awards each startup up to $10K apiece and they will work in their existing sites. Competition was brisk: the program received 202 applications; 124 applications met the submission criteria. Six startups were chosen.
