LAB RATS: University Ventures Fund, the $100 million investment partnership backed by German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG, University of Texas Investment Management Company and others, announced the launch of UV Labs to work with postsecondary institutions to build products to solve "serious issues of accessibility, affordability, quality and accountability facing higher education." (Among UVF's notable investments is UniversityNow, an online platform for affordable college education and degree, led by Gene Wade.) Former Apollo Group CTO Satish Menon will lead the SF-based company which, according to GigaOM, seeks to disrupt higher-ed from within the institution. But first, he's gotta build the right team.
