Are Employers Key to the Success—and Relevance—of MOOCs?

THE MOOC FORMULA: Many variants of the term “game changer” have been applied to MOOCs. And this time, it appears that employers hold the key to the online learning game. The Wall Street Journal reports that Coursera, like edX and Udacity, is teaming up to offer classes from tech employers—another sign that online course providers are “scaling back their ambitions to upend the world of academia to make a profit.” Corporate partners for Coursera’s “Global Skills Initiative,” which aims to align university courses with job-ready skills, include Cisco, Microsoft and Qualcomm.
