Houghton Mifflin Gets Curiosityville

May 19, 2014

CURIOSITYVILLE: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is on a roll. Today HMH said it had snapped up Maryland-based Curiosityville. Details of the acquisition were not made public. Curiosityville was launched in June 2012 by Susan Magsamen, a writer and advisor on learning, creativity and family engagement, Curiosityville aims to give families and educators resources to help children, ages 3 to 8 years old, build resiliency and strong physical, social-emotional, and academic skills at an early age. It has leaned heavily on evidence-based research on how children learn and is aligned with Common Core Standards.

Partners have included the likes of National Geographic, Johns Hopkins University, the Association of Children's Museums and Goddard Schools. Curiosityville is a subscription-based service and includes an online store that sells products recommended by Curiosityville staff.

The deal follows closely on HMH's acquisition of Channel One News earlier this month, as well as Education Analytics Company last November. HMH emerged from bankruptcy to raise $220 million in an IPO last November.
