The Center for Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning

Teach Plus is in year two of a bold effort to ensure all students experience rigorous, grade-level, and affirming instruction every day, taught by thriving and diverse educators. The Center for Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning (CITEL) at Teach Plus, is building a new sector in education where teachers work on high-impact teams, guided by expert teacher leaders and supported by high-quality curriculum. CITEL is developing a national learning network to advance the policies, practices, models, and resources needed to improve instruction at the pace students deserve. The Center currently supports 6 Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning pilots across 8 states through a national Community of Practice.

The Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning hypothesis:

When a coherent academic strategy—grounded in high-quality instructional materials, aligned professional learning and strategic use of AI/tech—is centered within diverse teacher teams working with a shared purpose, led by a highly effective teacher-leader with the collaboration structures, planning routines, and protected time needed, instruction becomes equitably rigorous and affirming every day — and teaching becomes a satisfying and sustainable career.

All pilot teams participate in the Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning Community of Practice (CoP), which aims to articulate a clear and inspiring path for integrating academics and teaming structures as the standard way schools operate. Together, the community seeks to elevate its collective voice as influential leaders shaping the future of schools so every student experiences belonging and opportunity.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to and working closely with the Head of CITEL and Leader in Residence, you serve as a key team member in building the CITEL learning engine by leading the CITEL Community of Practice. As the Managing Director, you develop a deep understanding of how the ITEL hypothesis is taking shape across pilots and translate those lessons into insights that advance the community’s work—particularly around the conditions needed to successfully integrate academics and talent.

In this role, you design and facilitate the Community of Practice, including bi-monthly virtual meetings and an annual in-person convening, while ensuring that emerging insights and best practices are captured and turned into practical tools and resources for the broader field. Through regular virtual meetings, in-person convenings, site visits, individual check-ins, and quarterly grant reporting, you build strong relationships and support meaningful learning across the pilot teams.

This position reports to the Head of CITEL, who owns the vision for learning and the Community of Practices, and district and school-level experimentation for the Center for Inspired Teaching, Exceptional Learning. Responsibilities include the following:

Community of Practice (CoP) Architecture & Execution

  • Translate the CITEL vision into a cohesive year-long learning arc. Own the end-to-end design of the CoP arc, individual sessions, and the annual convening to ensure every touchpoint is a rigorous, goal-aligned experience for all pilot teams and supports the ITEL hypothesis
  • Design and deliver high-impact virtual and in-person sessions (including bi-monthly meetings) using best-in-class adult learning strategies. Ensure facilitation fosters a culture where pilot teams feel both inspired to learn and deeply accountable to the community.
  • Provide rigorous oversight of the learning calendar, content implementation, session logistics, and communication, maintaining a keen eye for detail to ensure every interaction is seamless, professional, and reflects a high bar for excellence. Manage and coordinate external consultants and project-based partners for short-term expertise as needed, to ensure high-quality delivery and a seamless participant experience.

Knowledge Management & Field Codification

  • Deeply engage with ITEL pilot teams and data collected to identify insights, conditions for success, and “bright spots” in the intersection of academics and talent.
  • Translate pilot insights into "better-than-the-status-quo" resources, templates, and best practices. Focus on creating immediately usable tools.
  • Establish feedback loops to measure adoption and "usability" of resources, and iterate on materials to ensure they consistently deliver high value to the community.
  • Serve as a credible expert in the intersection of academics (HQIM) and talent (strategic staffing) to influence internal and external stakeholders.

Relationship & Culture Stewardship

  • Build and cultivate deep trust with pilot teams and district leaders, acting as a supportive partner while maintaining a high bar for implementation and rigor.
  • Foster a culture of shared accountability, strengthening teams’ commitment to the ITEL hypothesis and their role within the broader community of practice.

Who You Are and Keys to Success

  • You have a depth of knowledge about High-Quality Instructional Material (HQIM), instructional coherence, and curriculum-based professional learning (CBPL), and a clear perspective on how strategic talent and staffing decisions are essential to ensuring student and teacher success.
  • A proven designer and facilitator of adult learning. You know how to create experiences that don't just share information, but foster learning through community, excitement, and shared accountability among participants.
  • Exceptional ability to translate a high-level vision into a concrete work plan and execute it with high quality. Skilled in setting clear performance expectations, managing toward measurable results, and directing the high-quality output of external consultants and project-based partners.
  • A consistent track record of achieving ambitious goals in collaborative environments. Demonstrates the tenacity and systems-thinking required to navigate the complexities of school systems and persevere through implementation challenges.
  • Advanced proficiency in creating professional, aesthetically polished learning supports and tools (e.g., sophisticated slide decks, interactive data collection tools, and digital learning platforms) to enhance experience and drive content mastery.
  • Expert at cultivating deep, authentic partnerships with diverse stakeholders. Ability to provide empathetic support and coaching while simultaneously maintaining an uncompromising bar for rigor and continuous improvement.
  • Recognized as a knowledgeable and authoritative voice within the education sector. Ability to establish immediate credibility and build trusting, collegial relationships with senior district and school leaders.
