Online Learning Marketplace Udemy Raises $12M Series B

Dec 7, 2012

UDEMY: $12 million to San Francisco-based Udemy in Series B round led by Insight Venture Partners, with existing investors Lightbank, MHS Capital, and Learn Capital also participating. The company has now raised a total of $16 million, which it will use to expand content offerings across different mobile platforms. Before all the current fanfare over MOOCs like Coursera and Udacity, Udemy offered an online course marketplace back in 2010 where teachers could create courses on just about anything--and charge whatever they want. Some numbers from the press release: the site now offers over 5,000 courses for over 500K students, with the top 10 instructors combined having earned over $1.6 million.
