SchoolMint Buys Smart Choice to Improve Admissions Tools Suite

Nov 20, 2019

SchoolMint, a San Francisco-based provider of K-12 enrollment management and behavior tools, has bought the Smart Choice preK-12 admissions and school choice management platform from Firefly Digital, a marketing firm based in Lafayette, La.

Founded in 2013, SchoolMint made the purchase to grow its presence among school districts, charter management organizations and charter schools nationwide, according to a statement Wednesday.

The acquisition brings SchoolMint to 10 of the 20 largest districts and more than 35 percent of U.S. charter schools. SchoolMint claims to serve over nine million students and more than 16,000 schools nationwide.

In 2017, SchoolMint was bought by Hero K12 as part of a $150 million investment from BV Investment Partners to acquire companies and build an integrated education data platform. Since then Hero K12 has rebranded under the SchoolMint name.

Founded in 2012, Smart Choice claims to serve more than 4.5 million students in more than 6,700 schools across 2,400-plus cities nationwide. Those schools include public, private, magnet, charter, career academies, early childhood education programs and other specialty programs. Firefly Digital bought Smart Choice Technologies in 2018. Firefly was founded in 1998.

Companies with a focus on enrollment that have attracted investor interest recently include CourseStorm, Homeroom and SchoolAdmin.
