ACADEMIC ACQUISITION: Science and health analytics publisher, Elsevier, has acquired bepress, a Berkeley, Calif.-based platform used by academics to share and showcase research online. Financial terms for the deal, which is already in effect, were not disclosed.
Founded in 1999, bepress claims that the 2 million articles in its database are used by more than 450 colleges and research institutions. According to Roger Schonfeld at the Scholarly Kitchen, the deal is part of Elsevier’s strategy to pivot beyond content licensing and “march to adopt and coopt open access.”
