Purdue Faculty Pass Resolution Against Kaplan Acquisition Decision

May 5, 2017

PURDUE PUSHES BACK: Purdue University’s unexpected acquisition of for-profit Kaplan University last week took many by surprise—including faculty members at Purdue, a public research university in Indiana. On Thursday, some faculty members pushed back against the purchase, passing a University Senate resolution calling the $1 deal “a violation of common-sense educational practice and respect for Purdue faculty,” Inside Higher Ed reports.

Faculty are urging the university's Board of Trustees and the president of Purdue, Mitch Daniels, to go back on decisions around buying Kaplan. According to Inside Higher Ed, the resolution is also calling on the board and president to include faculty in all future decisions about Kaplan, a majority online institution. The outlet also reports that faculty members were not aware of the acquisition, which will add nearly 32,000 students to Purdue’s roster, until an hour before the news was publicly announced.
