Anonymous Messaging App Yik Yak Is Shutting Down

May 1, 2017

YIK YAK NEVER COMIN’ BACK: For now, that is. The anonymous messaging app Yik Yak announced on Friday that it is closing its doors after an almost four-year stint. The news comes just four days after Bloomberg reported that the company recently sold its engineering team to Atlanta-based Square for $1 million—a small fraction of the company's peak value of $400 million.

After rapidly gaining popularity among college and high school students, Yik Yak faced backlash over bullying and harassment occurring on the social media app. The company nodded to its troubled past in its farewell note, saying “sometimes, of course, we didn’t get it right.” Yik Yak will start winding down its app this week.

A previous version of this article said Yik Yak sold its engineering team to Square for less than $3 million. This has been updated to reflect that the deal was made for $1 million.
