Coursera's Colorful Map Shows Online Learning Trends in the US

Jan 17, 2017

BIO BELT OR ART ANNEX? Red state, blue state, green state, yellow state. Coursera, a massive open online course platform, has mapped out the learning trends and interests among its 5 million U.S. users. The result is a colorful, interactive map of the states grouped into 12 distinct regions defined by online course popularity.

So what are the 12 states of Coursera? There’s the “Tech Trail,” made up (perhaps unsurprisingly) by California, Oregon and Washington. Head a little further inland to states including Arizona, Idaho and Nevada and you’ll hit the “Bio Belt”, where courses on medicine and biology are most popular. New York, New jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts make up the East Coast’s Finance Club, while southern states such as Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas—the “Teachers Corner”—are taking more classes on education and teaching. Check out Coursera’s “United States of Knowledge” here.
